Foundation of the Gene Center Munich as one of four centres for applied molecular biological research in Germany under the direction of Prof. E.-L. Winnacker

Formation of first biotech companies, such as Mikrogen, Micromet, MorphoSys and MediGene

1994

The German branch of Merck & Co, MSD Sharp & Dohme is established at Haar near Munich

1996

Munich is one of the winners of the BioRegio Competition of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

1997

Formation of BioM AG to meet the goals of the Munich "BioRegio concept". Core tasks include establishing the local network, project management of applications for funding and seed financing for start-ups.

1998

Takeover of Boehringer Mannheim by the Swiss company Roche Holding. The Penzberg site is developed into a research and production centre for diagnostics and pharmaceutical applications.

2000

Newly established  "Life Science Center Weihenstephan" of Technische Universität München (TUM) in the north of Munich

2000/2001

Dot.Com stock exchange crisis, severely hitting the biotech sector as well

2002

Commissioning of the IZB incubator at Weihenstephan
Opening of the BioKids child day-care centre in Martinsried
BioM AG manages the BioM venture capital fund for investments in subsequent financing phases

2004

General Electric Healthcare (GEHC) opens its global research and development facility, the GE Global Research Center in Garching near Munich

2005

Novartis takes over Hexal and moves the company headquarters of its generics subsidiary Sandoz to Holzkirchen in the south of Munich

2006

Formation of BioM Biotech Cluster Development GmbH, taking over from BioM AG networking activities to promote the location as well as the cluster management of the newly formed Bavarian Biotechnology Cluster as part of the Bavarian Cluster Initiative. The seed-financing sector remains at BioM AG. Both companies (AG and GmbH) are headed by Prof. Dr. Horst Domdey.

2007

Merck & Co. moves its EMEAC head office (Europe, Middle East, Africa, Canada) to Haar near Munich

2010

The Zukunftskonzept m4 (m4 future concept) for the region of Munich is among the winners of the Leading-Edge Cluster Competition of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
In keeping with the new approach, the Cluster now calls itself the “Munich Biotech Cluster m4
Commissioning of the latest West II section of the IZB biotechnology incubator in Martinsried, occupying some 25,000 m2 of laboratory space. Roughly 50 tenants employ over 600 members of staff.
